MONTPELIER — George Bush won the state’s 3 electoral votes. With 94% of the vote counted, Bush led 52% to 48%.
Rep. James M. Jeffords, a moderate Republican who has been the state’s only House member for 14 years, easily kept the seat of retiring Sen. Robert Stafford in the GOP column. Jeffords defeated Democrat William Gray, a former U.S. attorney making his first run for statewide office, 70% to 30%.
Democrat Madeleine Kunin won a third 2-year term as governor by making her best showing yet. She won 54% of the vote against state House Minority Leader Michael Bernhardt.
