National Election Returns : State-by-State Election Reports of Key Races and Issues : New Hampshire

Vice President George Bush handily won all four electoral votes in the state that gave him his first primary victory nine months ago. Republicans hoped to keep their lock on the state’s top offices.

Even Democrats had conceded that Michael S. Dukakis, governor of neighboring Massachusetts, was a longshot against Bush in New Hampshire, where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats 40% to 32% with 28% independent. Bush’s victory in the New Hampshire primary revived his candidacy after his third-place finish in Iowa last winter.

Four-term Rep. Judd Gregg defeated Democratic lawyer Paul McEachern in the race to succeed Gov. John Sununu, who decided not to seek a record fourth term. Former state Supreme Court Justice Chuck Douglas, a Republican, and James Donchess, the Democratic mayor of Nashua, waged a bitter campaign to succeed Gregg in the 2nd District, which has not elected a Democrat since 1912.
