George Bush, bolstered by his son Neil’s high profile as a Denver oilman and by Colorado’s solidly Republican voting history in presidential races, rolled to victory in the state.
Still up in the air were ballot initiatives making English the “official” state language and requiring voter approval of all future tax increases--matters that dominated the final weeks of a campaign that saw six congressional seats up for grabs.
The official English measure appeared headed for passage, but the tax amendment faltered in the face of strong opposition by public officials.
As expected, Colorado’s three Democratic and three Republican congressional incumbents won re-election. Democratic Rep. Pat Schroeder, who faced no serious opposition, coasted to a win, as did two incumbents who had been strongly challenged--Democratic Rep. David Skaggs and GOP Rep. Dan Schaefer.
