Eastman Kodak Co. said it has mailed 3.48 million checks in the past few days to wind up a court-approved settlement with owners of Kodak instant cameras. Kodak agreed to pay more than $106 million in cash and $89 million in certificates for rebates on purchases of Kodak products. The minimum payout on basic models is $50; the maximum is $70 for top-of-the-line models. The case is an expensive offshoot of the suit Polaroid Corp. filed against Kodak in April, 1976, when Kodak introduced its own instant cameras and film. Polaroid said Kodak infringed on its patents. After losing several rounds in courts, Kodak withdrew from instant photography in January, 1986.
