The alleged leader of an attempt to topple the Maldives’ government was led handcuffed through the capital of Male at the end of a rope as angry islanders shouted for revenge. “Give him to us,” shouted a crowd of several hundred as Abdullah Luthufi was led from the harbor area to the nearby national security headquarters. “We want to kill him.” Many spectators held placards demanding the execution of Luthufi and a second Maldivian, Sagah Ahmed Nasir, for last week’s coup attempt, which ended when Indian troops arrived.
