Barry Sanders rushed for 312 yards and 5 touchdowns Saturday to set National Collegiate Athletic Assn. single-season records for touchdowns and points scored as 14th-ranked Oklahoma State beat Kansas, 63-24.

Sanders, who carried 37 times, also became only the third player in NCAA history to top 2,000 yards in a season. He has 2,003.

Sanders, a 5-foot-8, 195-pound junior, is now averaging 222 yards per game and has 31 touchdowns and 188 points. Nebraska’s Mike Rozier and Penn State’s Lydell Mitchell had held the previous records of 29 and 174.

College football’s other 2,000-yard rushers are USC’s Marcus Allen (2,342) and Rozier (2,148).

In the first half, Sanders scored on runs of 4, 8, 20 and 21 yards. Sanders added a 3-yarder in the third quarter, and also had a 5-yard score nullified by a penalty. He had 26 carries of 5 or more yards and 6 times went for at least 20 yards as he topped the 300-yard mark for the third time this year.

Taking advantage of Kansas defense, the nation’s worst against the rush, backup tailback Gerald Hudson had 121 yards in just 4 carries and Oklahoma State, 7-2 overall, 4-2 in the Big Eight, finished with 536 yards on the ground. Kansas is now 1-9 and 1-5.
