King Glorious raced to a 1 3/4-length victory Saturday, holding off Past Ages in the $80,900 Hollywood Prevue Stakes at Hollywood Park.
The Halo Farms’ California-bred 2-year-old, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and ridden by Chris McCarron, covered the 7 furlongs in 1:21 1/5, knocking one-fifth of a second off the previous stakes record set by Copelan in 1982.
King Glorious returned $3.60, $2.40 and $2.40 as the odds-on favorite. Past Ages paid $2.60 and $2.40, while Shipping Time paid $3.40.
In virtually a 2-horse race, Past Ages challenged King Glorious but was unable to take the early lead. At the midpoint of the race, King Glorious opened up a lead and outlasted Past Ages.
Shipping Time tried a late rush on the front-runners but finished 2 1/2 lengths back of the winner.
The race was King Glorious’ first since July 23, and the victory extended the colt’s record to 4-0.
The winner’s purse of $47,150 boosted King Glorious’ earnings to $151,100.
