Mr. Roberts : Actor Eric Roberts Makes a Personal Statement in the Season’s New Jackets

Men who want more than conventional jackets are getting their wish this season. From Paris there are hip-huggers and military styles in gabardine, with meticulous details. From Italy there are classics with a twist, notably single-breasted styles in long silhouettes worn close, but not clinging, to the body. And the draped jacket--the Savile Row look--is re-inspiring London and New York. California designers who advocate comfort first are shaping their clothes in slightly wider proportions. And what looks best on any man now depends most on his personal style. That sort of freedom is no threat to Eric Roberts, an actor with definite fashion tastes. He likes to change his appearance often, as if every outfit lets him play a new character. He’ll drape a blazer over one shoulder or wear it with his shirttails untucked. Or he might forgo the jacket altogether for an ankle-length duster. Roberts even uses his hair as a personal expression, changing it from sleek and off the collar to shoulder-length, or to slightly curly and full. In fact, hair is an important accessory in his next role, in a movie called “Rude Awakening.” As a holdover from the hippie days, Roberts’ character wears a long ponytail made of hair extensions--strands of hair that are sewn into his own hair. grooming: Teddy Antolin / The Arthur John Salon, Los Angeles; stylist: Joanna Dendel; assistant stylist: Eddie Fernandez
