Liberalism’s Unpopularity
Letter writer David Kolpacoff shows ignorance of the U.S. historic political cycle by suggesting liberalism is now dead (Nov. 5). When Herbert Hoover became President in 1928 many conservatives said the liberal progressive era started by Teddy Roosevelt in 1900 was finished forever. In 1932, Franklin Roosevelt became President, starting a new liberal era. In 1964 when Lyndon Johnson demolished Barry Goldwater in the presidential race, many liberals said that conservatism was all washed up. But in 1966, Ronald Reagan became our governor, and in 1968, Richard Nixon our President.
Now we hear conservatives telling us liberalism is dead once again. Hey, are we seeing 1928 being repeated in 1988?
