Local News in Brief : Lockheed Reverses Stand on Rail Parking

Share

Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Co. officials have approved the use of a 70-space parking lot next to a Burbank train stop for drivers who want to use a new commuter train, Burbank officials said Monday.

Lockheed President John C. Brizendine wrote in a letter to Burbank Mayor Al F. Dossin that although the company presently has “a critical shortage of parking spaces for employees and representatives of our customers in the area adjacent to the train stop, we agree with the need for commuter rail service.”

The letter marked a turnaround for Lockheed, who had previously denied use of the parking lot, saying it could not spare the spaces. The state Department of Transportation has said it would approve a Burbank stop only if parking were available nearby.

Lockheed leases the parking lot from the Southern Pacific railroad.

Train service in Burbank is not anticipated until 1990, Lockheed officials said.

Burbank officials have been eager to have the commuter train, which began service in June, stop in the city because they feel it will help businesses and commuters. The train platform is between Empire Avenue and Vanowen Street west of Hollywood Way near the entrance to Lockheed.
