Tamil rebels seeking to scuttle upcoming elections crucial to an Indian-backed peace plan ambushed a bus in northeastern Sri Lanka, killing at least 27 members of the island’s ethnic Sinhalese majority and wounding three. About 15 guerrillas of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the main Tamil rebel group, ambushed the bus in Trincomalee district, about 150 miles north of the capital of Colombo, officials said. Meanwhile, Sinhalese extremists who also oppose the peace plan pressed a drive in the south to force out President Junius R. Jayewardene, staging attacks that left at least two people dead, officials said.
