Sri Lankan army units and police fired on thousands of people protesting the massacre of Sinhalese bus passengers by suspected Tamil rebels. The soldiers killed five and injured 17, police said. Two Sinhalese were killed and 11 wounded when the soldiers fired at 3,000 people demonstrating in Matala, 65 miles northeast of Colombo, after tear gas failed to disperse the crowd, police said. On Monday, soldiers and police killed three people and injured six when they broke up demonstrations in four towns in central Sri Lanka. The Tamil rebels killed 27 Sinhalese passengers in the bus attack, near the village of Pinkatiya about 140 miles northeast of Colombo.
