Chargers Give Kicker a Tryout in Case Abbott Can’t Play

The Chargers will give free-agent kicker Steve DeLine a tryout today as insurance in case Vince Abbott is unavailable for Sunday’s game against the Rams, Charger officials said Tuesday.

Abbott twisted his right knee on a second-quarter kickoff after a 23-yard field goal in Sunday’s 10-7 victory at Atlanta. His status remained uncertain Tuesday.

“We don’t know how serious (the injury) is at this point,” Coach Al Saunders said. “We’re going to wait until (today) to find out how it is. There’s a 50-50 chance of him playing Sunday, if it doesn’t get a little better by tomorrow, that will probably go down to a 25% chance. The worst scenario is he could have surgery with torn cartilage. The best scenario is that he would be able to kick this weekend.”

DeLine, 27, was cut by the Chargers in training camp. He made a 40-yard field goal and missed a 50-yarder during exhibition season. He also has had tryouts with Seattle and Philadelphia.

In 3 years at Colorado State, where he is second on all-time scoring list, DeLine made 75 of 77 extra points and 46 of 62 field goals.

BASKETBALL

University of San Diego freshman Rachael Chism, a forward-center from Reno, will undergo surgery for a torn knee ligament on Saturday.

Chism, 6-2, injured her knee in practice last week.

“I considered her to be our seventh or eighth player off the bench,” Coach Kathy Marpe said, “and a starter midway into the season.”

Marpe said she will redshirt Chism, who was Nevada’s player of the year as a senior, made All-State 3 years in a row and was an All-American honorable mention.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State defeated Cal State Fullerton, 15-4, 15-13, 16-14, in a Big West Conference game at Peterson Gym. The Aztecs (22-10, 9-8) were led by Kim Washington with 18 kills and Jackie Mendez with 17. Fullerton is 11-23 and 0-17.

Claudia Johnson had a match-high 24 kills, but it wasn’t enough to keep Loyola Marymount from defeating U.S. International University, 15-6, 5-15, 8-15, 15-10, 15-5, at Loyola Marymount (9-18). Stephanie Milbradt had 31 assists for the Gulls (6-15).
