Dow Jones Promotes Kann to Publisher of Wall St. Journal

Peter R. Kann, associate publisher of the Wall Street Journal since 1979, has been named publisher, effective Jan. 1.

Dow Jones & Co., the Journal’s parent company, said Kann, 45, will replace Warren H. Phillips as publisher. Phillips will continue as chairman and chief executive of Dow Jones.

In addition, Kann is being appointed editorial director of Dow Jones’ publications, a position that Phillips has held since 1971. Kann also will continue as one of two executive vice presidents of Dow Jones. The other, William L. Dunn, is publisher of the company’s Information Services Group.

Kann, who joined the Journal as a reporter when he graduated from Harvard in 1964, was a correspondent in Vietnam and the founding editor and publisher of the Asian Wall Street Journal. He won a Pulitzer Prize for international reporting in 1972.
