Quayle’s Wife Won’t Seek His Senate Seat
Marilyn Quayle, in a statement released Friday by her husband’s transition office, said she does not want the U.S. Senate seat Dan Quayle will give up to become vice president.
Gov. Robert D. Orr met with Mrs. Quayle on Thursday in Washington, and she emphasized that her responsibilities as the wife of the vice president and the mother of three school-age children would not allow her enough time to succeed Quayle in the Senate job, spokesman Jim Carroll said.
Quayle, elected to the vice presidency on Nov. 8, said Monday he would step down as senator before Jan. 3 to give Republican incumbent Orr--rather than incoming Democrat Evan Bayh--the opportunity to appoint a successor.
Orr has interviewed at least eight candidates, but he has no formal list, aide James E. Knoop said.
