UCSD Reaches National Final in Men’s Soccer

Carrick Brewster scored on a penalty kick in sudden-death to give the UC San Diego men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Messiah College (Pa.) in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III playoffs Friday at Rochester, N.Y.

UCSD will play for its first men’s NCAA national championship today against host Rochester Institute of Technology.

The match was scoreless through regulation and overtime and tied, 8-8, after two 5-shot rounds of penalty kicks. In sudden death, Messiah had the first shot, but UCSD goalie Greg Stadler made the save. Brewster then scored for UCSD (22-0-2).

RIT (16-0-1) defeated Salem State, 3-2 (4-3 in penalty kicks).

BASEBALL

The Padres announced their 40-man winter roster, listing 35 players and leaving 5 spots open for potential additions.

The club added 3 players: infielder Carlos Baerga, pitcher Ricky Bones and outfielder Thomas Howard. All 3 have completed 3 years in the Padre organization.

The Padres also dropped 4 players from the roster: pitchers Keith Comstock, Todd Simmons and Ed Vosberg and infielder Brad Pounders.

BASKETBALL

The Christian Heritage men won their opener, defeating Occidental, 110-95, at the Christ College Irvine Thanksgiving Tournament. Mark Kraatz scored 28 points for Christian Heritage, which will play either Christ College or La Verne for the championship tonight.

Freshman Camille Armijo made a jumper from the top of the key with 8 seconds to lift the Point Loma Nazarene women past UC San Diego, 62-60, in the opener for both. Armijo and UCSD’s Jill Koster each scored 15 points.

The San Diego State women defeated the Australian Junior National team, 94-66, in an exhibition at Peterson Gym, Chana Perry led SDSU with 30 points.

Gary Zarecky, USIU men’s coach, and David Ybarra, coach at Sweetwater High, will be conducting a clinic for boys, girls and coaches today at 1 p.m. at Sweetwater High School. The clinic will be followed by a scrimmage by the USIU men’s team.
