Toot! Toot! Toy Trains Are Chugging By in Pasadena

Toy trains have changed a little over the years, but for the most part they remain resistant to the fast-paced changes in the laser-zapping, supertechno toy world.

This weekend, families can enjoy this hobby at the Toy Train Operating Society’s exhibit at the Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E. Green St. The show, previously the exclusive playground of collectors, is now open to the public.

More than 14,000 square feet will be laid out in dozens of displays with intricate landscapes. Trains will range in size from 3/16th of an inch gauge to 2 1/8 inches, and include antique and modern cars.

There will be movie screenings, videos and slide shows, as well as live and taped modeling demonstrations on how to lay track, paint scenery and construct miniature landscapes. There also will be a kitbashing contest. Kitbashing is toy train lingo for joining two or more kits together in clever and visually pleasing arrangements.
