CHANDIGARH, India —
Security forces killed at least five Sikh extremists in a shoot-out near Amritsar on Sunday, police said.
Police and paramilitary forces encountered the extremists from the Khalistan Commando Force, one of the groups waging a bloody campaign for a Sikh homeland in Punjab, as they started an early morning sweep through the countryside.
On Saturday night, gunmen opened fire indiscriminately at a village tavern in the north of the state, killing at least six people and wounding about eight.
