‘Britain Tramples on Rights’

It’s a rare day when I find myself in agreement with a Times editorial, let alone find that my viewpoint is being changed from reading a more fair or logical point of view.

So, though I read my “daily dose of socialism” in your pages, and have without fail for 22 years, for what it is worth to you--a word of praise.

Your “Britain Tramples on Rights” editorial was excellent. Being an English immigrant, it has always been for me my (former) country, right or wrong. I feel this way now about America. My sympathies have always been for the British government struggling away in a country from which it would dearly love to extricate itself. Yet, as you point out, Britain is losing more in the means employed than is really justified by the end result.

On the other hand, the Irish bandits consider themselves in an all-out war with the British people and give no thought to anyone’s “rights” when they pull a trigger or explode a bomb. For them all is fair in love and war.

Perhaps the English can rise above this mentality by reconsidering whether they are correct in their present reactions to the IRA.
