French Police Official Will Head Interpol

BANGKOK, Thailand — Ivan Barbot, the director general of the French police force, was elected Wednesday as president of the International Police Organization for a four-year term, officials said.
He succeeds John R. Simpson of the U.S. Secret Service.
Barbot, 51, speaking at the end of the weeklong Interpol general assembly, said he will focus efforts on organized crime, international terrorism, drug trafficking and economic crimes. He also will work to improve cooperation and communication among the 146 member countries of Interpol.
