Gunmen surrounded a church in a Philippine mountain village and opened fire, killing 17 worshipers and injuring nine, the military said. A military spokesman blamed Communist rebels for the attack but said investigators were unsure of a motive. The government-run Philippines News Agency quoted a survivor as saying that the villagers in the town of Asturias, which is on the southern island of Cebu, had gathered for evening prayers Tuesday when the gunmen opened fire. The agency said the dead included at least three children under the age of 9.
