The Fillmore City Council on Tuesday unanimously elected Delores Day mayor.

A Fillmore resident since 1944, she has served continuously on the council for 18 years and has served three previous terms as mayor. She succeeds Gary Creagle, who did not run for reelection.

Day committed council members to unity and promised an end to the bitterness that has splintered the council in the last year.

Council factions have clashed over over the pace of development, a proposal for a casino and allegations of sexual harassment against former City Manager Stan Greene.

“When we do disagree, we will do so with respect for each other’s opinions,” she said.

Day said her brisk efficiency during meetings was most likely the key factor in her selection. Her term ends in 1990.
