A 20-hour battle between army troops and Maoist guerrillas on the edge of Peru’s cocaine-growing region left at least six soldiers and up to 100 rebels dead, news reports and officials said. The clash erupted when Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrillas ambushed two army trucks near Marquilla in Leoncio Prado province, 225 miles northeast of Lima, the official Andina news agency said. A Defense Ministry spokesman confirmed that six soldiers were killed and at least 10 were wounded.
