Cyclist Steve Bauer of Canada won the support of the International Cyclist Union in his bid to escape a criminal assault charge in a Belgian court.
Bauer was disqualified from second place in last September’s world road race championship at Renaix, Belgium, after being blamed for the crash that cost Claude Criquielion of Belgium a medal 75 meters from the finish.
Criquielion, who finished the race on foot, filed the charge against Bauer.
The cycling group has asked Hector Gallee, the president of the Belgian Cycling Federation, to ask Criquielion to drop the charge.
