Palestinian Declaration of Statehood
It was very disappointing to read your editorial “Razzle-Dazzle in Algiers” (Nov. 16), and find out that you had nothing positive to say about the Palestinian declaration of statehood.
While The Times editorial criticized the Palestine National Congress for not defining the boundaries of its declared state, it conveniently failed to mention that when the state of Israel was declared, its boundaries were not defined either. Furthermore, the editorial dwells on too many worn out arguments that do not serve the cause of peace.
The history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is full of missed opportunities for peace. With the negative arguments made by The Times and by others who hold similar views towards the recent concessions made by the PNC, another valuable opportunity for peace could be missed. This may slow down the Palestinian people’s march toward their goal of attaining freedom, but it will certainly not prevent them from reaching that goal, because the rights of all people to self-determination and freedom are much stronger than the arguments made in your editorial.
