Events in the news this week.
Thursday is the deadline for agricultural workers to file for legal status under the amnesty program administered by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. More than 147,000 illegal immigrants had applied for legalization in Orange County by May 4, which was the deadline for most people. Ugandans, Ethiopians, Poles and Afghans have until Dec. 22, 1989, to file under for amnesty under a separate bill.
