Armored Car Guard Robbed of $166,000 by Two Gunmen

Two diminutive gunmen ambushed an armored car security guard in the lobby of a Universal City movie complex Saturday and escaped with $166,000 and the guard’s gun.

Sheriff’s Deputy Hal Grant said the “very clean cut” and well-dressed--but short--thieves apparently had been hanging around the lobby for more than two hours before the 5:40 p.m. robbery of the Federal Armored Express Inc. guard.

While the guard’s partner waited in the armored car outside the Cineplex Odeon theater, the guard went inside for the bags of cash, Grant said. As the guard was returning through the lobby, one of the gunmen stepped in front of him and the other closed in from behind.

While the guard was held at gunpoint, the robbers took the bags of cash he held in his hands and the gun from his holster.

The thieves escaped through a rear doorway where a third suspect was waiting for them in a car, Grant said.
