Olympic champion Uwe-Jens Mey of East Germany won the season-opening World Cup speedskating 500-meter race by skating the Berlin course in 37.27 seconds. Igor Zhelezovski of the Soviet Union won the 1,500-meter race in 1:57.43.
East German athletes swept the women’s races, with Angela Hauck winning the 500-meter sprint in 40.40 and Gunda Kleemann taking the 1,500 in 2:07.43.
