Voting
This letter is in rebuttal to the letter (Nov. 21) which stated that people in the United States should be fined for not voting.
In Australia, another democracy rapidly moving towards centralized government, it is illegal not to vote and citizens are fined for not voting. In effect, people are forced to vote to preserve their freedom.
Not only would instituting a fine for not voting in the United States be counterproductive, but it would probably be unconstitutional.
If half of the people in this country are not voting, it is obvious that they are trying to tell the government something; they don’t like the choice of candidates.
If we want to increase voter turnout, let us give the people a better choice of candidates--a choice for freedom!
