Watched by U.S. warships, Iran is staging its first large-scale naval maneuvers in the northern Persian Gulf since the Aug. 20 cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War. Iran also has begun operations to clear some of the hundreds of mines still floating in the gulf, posing a hazard to shipping, U.S. and Iranian officials said. U.S. sources said that since the cease-fire, the Iranians have moved their gunboat bases away from portions of the southern gulf but continue to operate near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
