Mercy Appeal Fails; Gandhi Killers to Die

President Ramaswami Venkataraman rejected last-minute appeals for mercy for two Sikh radicals convicted in the 1984 assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and they will be hanged Friday, it was disclosed today.

“All preparations have been made by the jail staff for their executions,” a lawyer involved in the case told United Press International. “Their relatives have been informed and a hangman has been summoned from a neighboring state.”

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted official sources as saying Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh will be executed Friday at 8 a.m.
