Local News in Brief : Countywide : Chemical Vials Case to Be Discussed Dec. 13

The vials of chemicals that washed up on Orange County beaches last month will be among topics discussed during a special hearing conducted by the State Lands Commission on Dec. 13 in Santa Monica.

Diane Jones, the commission’s public information officer, said the hearing will be at 10 a.m. at the Santa Monica City Council Chambers, 1685 Main St. She added that the commission will also be looking into the dumping of medical waste in San Diego County.

“The State Lands Commission is the property owner in this because the commission has regulation over all ungranted tidelands and submerged areas,” Jones said. “We will be hearing from experts from the Department of the Navy, the Department of Defense, the Coast Guard, county health officials and district attorney representatives.”

The session is open to the public.

The vials contained antiseptics to be used in case of chemical or biological warfare, county health officials said. The Navy said the discarded vials “probably” came from military supplies, but no branch of the armed services has taken responsibility for the dumping or has specified the source.
