At least 53 members of an elite Argentine coast guard unit seized weapons and abandoned their barracks north of Buenos Aires, while soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Regiment attempted a short-lived uprising at their garrison a few miles west of the capital, officials said. The Defense Ministry blamed the incidents on military discontent over prosecution of officers for human rights abuses. The coast guard members were reported still on the run with four machine guns, 200 rifles, 30 handguns and 100,000 rounds of ammunition. At the garrison, Capt. Jorge Videla, son of former President Jorge Videla, who is in prison for human rights abuses, tried to rally soldiers to stage an uprising but the attempt was quelled, a military spokesman said.
