Strong Aftershock Hits South China

A strong aftershock of an earthquake that devastated a remote region of southwestern China killed at least one person, injured 24 and toppled more than 1,000 homes, newspapers reported today.

The aftershock, which registered 6.7 on the Richter scale, also forced the closure of several schools and a cement factory in Yunnan province, Hong Kong newspapers, quoting the domestic China News Service, reported.

An earlier report from China’s official New China News Agency said Wednesday’s aftershock injured 13 people and damaged 620 houses.

China News Service said the new casualties occurred in Lancang county, which bore the brunt of the big earthquake on Nov. 6.

That temblor measured 7.6 on the Richter scale and killed 730 people.
