Contract for New Jail Omitted One Main Item: Doors
A $34-million contract to build a new five-story jail lacks one major item--doors.
Omitted from the contract was $1.5 million for 195 electronic sliding glass cell doors and other furnishings, city officials said last week.
“It sounds to me like we’re buying a car without the two front wheels. I thought when we voted to go ahead with the jail that it would come complete with doors,” said City Councilman Matt Carlucci.
Michael Berg, sheriff’s director of jails and prisons, said the cell doors will be purchased out of a $2-million contingency fund established to pay for cost overruns.
