Ozone damage could cause serious economic losses to California’s $1-billion cotton industry, according to scientists at UC Riverside. Ozone, the principal pollutant in smog, cuts into cotton yield by causing fewer and smaller bolls in the crop, the scientists said. Their report was based on a study done in the San Joaquin Valley during this year’s cotton-growing season from April through October.
