Idaho Hangs On for 38-30 Win in I-AA Playoffs
Quarterback John Friesz, who suffered a serious ankle sprain in the third quarter, passed for four first-half touchdowns, and Idaho hung on for a 38-30 win over Northwestern State (La.), in the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division I-AA playoffs Saturday at Moscow, Ida.
Idaho (11-1) advanced to next Saturday’s semifinal at Greenville, S.C., against Furman, which defeated Marshall, 13-9.
In the other quarterfinal games, Western Kentucky routed Eastern Kentucky, 41-14, and Georgia Southern beat Stephen F. Austin, 27-6, to set up a semifinal between the winners at Statesboro, Ga.
In the Division II semifinals, North Dakota State defeated Cal State Sacramento, 42-20, and Portland State downed Texas A&I;, 35-27.
Portland State (11-2-1) won with the help of 3 touchdown passes by Chris Crawford.
