Canadiens Shut Down Red Wings, 7-2
Claude Lemieux scored his 14th goal of the season and set up Brian Skrudland for the game-winner in the second period as the surging Montreal Canadiens defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 7-2, in a National Hockey League game Monday night.
The Canadiens, who extended their Adams Division lead to 9 points over the Boston Bruins, are 13-2-3 in their last 18 games.
After Petr Svoboda gave the Canadiens a 4-2 lead late in the second period, Guy Carbonneau, Russ Courtnall and Mats Naslund extended Montreal’s advantage with third-period goals.
Patrick Roy faced 28 shots and made 26 saves for the Canadiens, and Glen Hanlon faced 37 shots and made 30 saves for the Red Wings.
