Insurgents of the Maoist Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) movement killed two French rural development workers and three Peruvians in the Andes, reportedly after holding a mock trial, Peruvian officials said. The attack occurred in Haquira, a remote village 350 miles southeast of Lima. The French victims were identified as Thomas Pelissier, 25, and Corinne Seguin, 22; the Peruvians were not named. In neighboring Bolivia, authorities said Lt. Cmdr. Juan Carlos Vega Llona, 48, Peru’s naval attache and an opponent of Sendero Luminoso, was shot to death in the capital of La Paz.
