College Basketball Roundup : Frazier Leads Penn Upset of No. 17 Villanova

Walt Frazier III had 25 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds as Pennsylvania upset 17th-ranked Villanova, 71-70, Tuesday night at Philadelphia.

Jerry Simon made a crucial 3-pointer with 5 minutes left and hit an important free throw with 10 seconds left as the Quakers improved to 2-1. Villanova is 4-2.

“It’s the best win I’ve ever had,” Frazier said.

Penn lost to Villanova, 84-55, last season.

Oklahoma 104, Southern Methodist 87--Mookie Blaylock, who made only 3 of 21 tries from 3-point range in the previous 3 games, made 7 of 10 and and scored 30 points as the No. 6 Sooners (3-1) won at Norman, Okla.

Iowa 95, Northern Iowa 76--B.J. Armstrong scored 29 points and Roy Marble had 22 as the No. 5 Hawkeyes (5-0) won at Iowa City.

Illinois 97, Florida 67--Nick Anderson scored 21 points to lead the 7th-ranked Illini (4-0) at Champaign, Ill.

Notre Dame 84, Indiana 71--Joe Fredrick scored 23 points as the Irish (3-0) beat the Hoosiers (3-4) at South Bend, Ind.

Indiana was coming off a 101-79 loss to Louisville and had allowed opponents to score more than 100 points in 3 of its last 4 games.

Indiana’s Jay Edwards, who was averaging 21 points per game, went scoreless until 6 minutes remained and finished with only 11 points.

Louisville 83, Murray St. 51--LaBradford Smith and Kenny Payne opened the game with consecutive 3-pointers and the No. 15 Tigers (2-2) made 11 in all to rout Murray State (3-2) at Louisville. Louisville attempted a school-record 23 3-pointers.

Louisiana Tech 111, Louisiana State 109--Center Randy White scored 7 of his 35 points in overtime and the Bulldgos (4-1) got their last 7 points on free throws to beat the Tigers (1-2) at Baton Rogue, La. LSU freshman Chris Jackson had 48 points, but the Tigers still lost to the Bulldogs for only the 5th time in 29 games since Dale Brown became coach 17 years ago.

Pittsburgh 81, Jacksonville 74--Jason Matthews of St. Monica High in Santa Monica scored 34 points, including 25 in the second half, as the Panthers (3-1) won at Pittsburgh for the 1,000th victory in the school’s history. Matthews was 10 of 13 from the field, including 4 of 4 from the 3-point range, and 10 of 10 from the free-throw line.

Purdue 57, Illinois St. 56--Freshman Loren Clyburn made 2 free throws with 13 seconds remaining for his only points to give the Boilermakers (3-2) a victory at West Lafayette, Ind.

Seton Hall 90, St. Peter’s 63--Australian Olympian Andrew Gaze hit 3 consecutive 3-point shots to ignite a 19-5 run midway through the first half that carried the No. 20 Pirates (6-0) to victory at South Orange, N.J.

Washington 79, DePaul 75--Mike Hayward scored 24 points and Eldridge Recasner added 19 as the Huskies (2-2) won at Rosemont, Ill. Washington was coming off an 89-80 loss to Fresno State.

Oregon 72, Portland 64--Keith Reynolds scored a game-high 20 points and Frank Johnson added in 17 to lead the Ducks to a nonconference victory at Portland, Ore.

The Ducks are 2-1, and the Pilots are 0-4.
