The Devil’s Gate Multi-Use Advisory Committee has received $150,000 from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

The money will hasten the planning phase of a project aimed at creating a 240-acre recreational area, said Ernie Messner, head of the committee.

The recreational area is planned for Devil’s Gate Reservoir, which is between La Canada Flintridge and Altadena, just north of the 210 Freeway next to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

An additional $650,000 may be available from the conservancy once the plans are approved and construction is set to begin, Messner said.

After decades of neglect, the committee, already armed with $70,000 and the help of two well-known environmental artists, has begun planning the transformation of the reservoir into a recreational area. The project could cost up to $20 million.

Suggestions include turning the reservoir into a year-round lake for sailing; building a series of natural pools and building hiking and horse trails, bird sanctuaries and picnic areas. Another suggestion would turn the 88-foot spillway of the dam into a colossal slip-and-slide.
