New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, chosen by President-elect George Bush just weeks ago to serve as White House chief of staff, said in an interview published today that he is considering running for the Senate in 1990 or ’92.

Sununu told the Boston Globe that because his role as chief of staff will involve helping set domestic policy, and given the large war chest left from his last gubernatorial campaign, he is attracted to a Senate candidacy.

“I may run again,” Sununu said when asked what he would do with the $232,000 in leftover campaign contributions. “There are Senate seats coming up in this state, and I am not going to shut my door on running again at all.”

Sununu said that as chief of staff, he will set the day’s agenda and act as a “tough critic” for the federal budget drawn up by Richard G. Darman, Bush’s choice for budget director.

“I am not going to go down to Washington to be there forever. I want to do this job for the vice president, the President-elect, as long as he needs me to do this job.”
