Tournament Host CS Long Beach to Play Nebraska Women

Share

Coming off 2 consecutive losses--its worst start in 10 years--the Cal State Long Beach women’s basketball team will seek its first victory tonight as the host team in the Dial Soap tournament.

Long Beach (0-2) will play Nebraska (4-1) at 7:30 at University Gym. New Mexico State (3-2) will meet Grambling (2-2) at 5:30.

The 49ers dropped from No. 2 in the rankings to No. 9 this week, after losing last week to unranked LSU at Baton Rouge, La., and to top-ranked Tennessee at Knoxville, Tenn.

Long Beach Coach Joan Bonvicini was displeased with her team’s inside play and said there will be lineup changes tonight. Penny Moore and Janet Haneberg will start at forwards, replacing Cheryl Dowell and Shameil Coleman.

A bright spot for the team has been the play of its guards. Traci Waites is averaging 23.5 points a game and Penny Toler 17.

The tournament championship game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, preceded by the consolation game at 5:30.
