The Philadelphia Phillies traded outfielder Phil Bradley to the Baltimore Orioles for pitcher Ken Howell and a minor league pitcher Thursday night.

Bradley, 30 next March, hit .264 with 11 home runs and 56 runs batted in last season. He stole 11 bases, and his 14 assists were third-highest in the National League for an outfielder. He also struck out 106 times.

“We’ve been looking for right-handed hitting. He’s a fine defensive outfielder and has speed. He has the talent we were looking for,” Oriole General Manager Roland Hemond said.

Hemond had acquired Howell from the Dodgers Sunday in a trade for first baseman Eddie Murray.

“We just acquired him and didn’t plan on trading him,” Hemond said. “It was rather difficult to call him tonight to tell him. Naturally he was quite surprised.”

Howell, 28, split his time between the majors and minors last season. He was 10-1 with a 3.27 earned-run average at triple-A Albuquerque and 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA in Los Angeles.

The Phillies also got left-hander Gordon Dillard, 24.
