Mead Corp. of Dayton, Ohio, has signed a letter of intent to purchase the Michie Co., a legal publishing company headquartered in Charlottesville, Va., from MacMillan Inc. for $226.5 million. The transaction is expected to close before year-end. Mead is a paper and forest products company with a major involvement in electronic publishing. Michie Co., founded in 1897, publishes annotated state statutes, state agency publications and reference books.
