CHP Station Selects Its Officer of the Year

Donald R. Stanfield has been honored as officer of the year by his fellow officers in the Santa Fe Springs station of the California Highway Patrol. Stanfield joined the CHP in 1965 and has been on road patrol his entire career. For the past 22 years he has been a motorcycle officer in the Santa Fe Springs area. He has been involved in only one on-duty nonpreventable accident in his career, and has not used a sick day in the last six years, the CHP announced. He also has received numerous CHP commendations and thank-you letters from the motoring public, without a single complaint.

Stanfield, 54, was born and reared in Whittier, and graduated from Whittier High School in 1952. Before joining the CHP, he served three years with the Whittier Police Department. Stanfield is married and has six children. He lives in Fullerton.

Olympic Gold Medalists Honored in Cerritos

Bret Barberie and Jimmy Kim, Cerritos residents who won gold medals in the summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, were honored recently at a community reception in the Cerritos Public Library. Barberie played shortstop and second base on the U.S. Olympic baseball team that beat Japan, 5-3, for the gold medal. He had a .288 batting average and hit two home runs during the Olympics. Barberie attended Gahr High School, Cerritos College and USC, was named Pac-10 player of the year, and has been drafted by the Montreal Expos.

Kim battled past five opponents to win gold in the heavyweight division in the Olympic demonstration sport of taekwondo . He graduated from Cerritos High School, where he competed on the Dons wrestling and football teams, in addition to his taekwondo training at his father’s martial arts studio in Artesia. Now 21, Kim is majoring in business at Cal State Long Beach and teaches at his father’s studio.

St. John Bosco 2nd in Academic Decathlon

Nine students from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower received individual medals and a team trophy for winning second place in the Southern California Private Schools Academic Decathlon. They are Pat Saint Lary, Albert Castillo, Jon Estanislao, David Wayland, Michael Carty, John Magana, David Bradley, Michael Pennino and Joseph Biagioni. The students led by their coach, Jim Cross, were rated in a series of 10 events including multiple-choice tests, speech, essay writing and interviews. A team from Bishop Amat High School in La Puente won first place, and Notre Dame High of Los Angeles was third. A team from Brethren High School in Paramount finished in a four-way tie with the above schools for first place in one of the major events called a super quiz.

Homecoming Queens Crowned at 2 Colleges

Ny Kim, representing the Cambodian Student Assn., was chosen homecoming queen at Long Beach City College. Kim, 21, is studying office occupations and lives in Long Beach. Members of her court were Dione Washington, Katie Chiem and Jill Shrotman. At Compton Community College, this year’s homecoming queen is Indra Burnett of Compton, a sophomore majoring in business. Members of her court were Monique Adams, Michelle Gibbs, Patricia Gilbert and Meninda Turner.

Santa Fe Springs Gives Beautification Awards

Ten winners of residential beautification awards have been announced by the city of Santa Fe Springs. They are homes owned by John and Eloina Alameda, Ronald J. Salazar, Alex F. Holguin, Sherman and Vada Conrad, Thomas and Vera Baxter, Joseph A. McAnn, William and Kathleen Rounds, Wilma L. Daniels, Tony and Genevieve Contreras and Modesto and Modesta Vargas. Their homes were chosen for good landscaping, maintenance, structural architecture and compliance with property maintenance ordinances.

Former Prisoner of War Receives Medal

Luis J. Franco, a 37-year resident of Santa Fe Springs, was awarded the POW-MIA medal in a ceremony at the Long Beach Naval Station. Franco was a staff sergeant and flight engineer with the 8th Air Force in England during World War II. On a bombing raid over Berlin, his B-17 was shot down. Franco parachuted out, was captured by Germans and spent a year in several prison camps in Germany and Poland until liberation in 1945. Franco, 70, is a retired accountant and proponent of benefits for veterans and former prisoners of war.

Cerritos College Student President Elected

Business administration major Jesus Gomez has been elected president of the Cerritos College associated student body. Gomez, a graduate of Norwalk High School, says he plans to work toward mandating the associated student body fee and building a new student center above the student bookstore. He is a winner of the school’s Gold Falcon Award for outstanding service and leadership in the student body. He plans to continue his education at USC.

Hospital Guild of Downey Installs Officers

The San Antonio Guild of Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles installed officers during a luncheon at the home of member Deborah Robinson. New officers are Janice Foster, president; Ruth Lehman, vice president; Miriam Arey, secretary; and Nancy Jamison, treasurer. The Downey guild raises money for the hospital.

Hyatt Employee Is Catering Director of Year

Nancy Monte-Frye, director of catering and convention services at the Hyatt Regency in Long Beach, has been selected catering director of the year for the Hyatt hotel chain. She was chosen from a field of more than 90 candidates. She has worked for the Hyatt chain 15 years, and moved to Long Beach five years ago as a member of the management team chosen to open the Hyatt Regency.
