U.S. Quotas and Trade Policies
Art Pine’s story on the array of U.S. quotas and other protective devices is pretty accurate as far as it goes but it leaves out one entire aspect of the situation (“Free Trade: U.S. Talks a Good Game,” Part I, Dec. 1).
Yes, we do have these restrictions. Why? Because, in all the world, despite its current economic problems, the U.S. economy is still the juiciest plum, the choice market that companies around the globe seek to penetrate. And penetrate it they certainly do.
If we had no protections, the penetration would be even deeper, with consequent loss of even more industries and jobs in the United States.
Do we need that?
