National Service Insurance Co. was stopped from doing further business in California by the state Department of Insurance, pending a hearing into what the department described as the firm’s shaky financial records. The firm was ordered to answer charges Jan. 4 that it “is operating in a manner hazardous to its policyholders, creditors and the public.” State investigators said National Service’s financial records are either unauditable or unavailable, that most of its accounts have not been reconciled for at least 12 months and that the company failed to file its last two quarterly statements.
