Due to pneumonia and pleurisy, the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s principal guest conductor, Simon Rattle, has been forced to cancel this week’s concerts with the orchestra and has been confined to bed. The orchestra’s assistant conductor, David Alan Miller, will step in to conduct the Thursday, Saturday and Sunday programs, in which are included works by Britten, Stravinsky, Sibelius and Leonard Bernstein. A spokeswoman for the Philharmonic said Tuesday that Rattle had a slightly milder case of his illness during the last three performances of Music Center Opera’s production of Berg’s “Wozzeck” but conducted nonetheless, exacerbating his condition.
