Dishonest Cabbies Fare Poorly in Chinese City
Taxi drivers in the northern Chinese city of Dalian who are caught cussing or bilking passengers will be forced to make public apologies in the local media and pay heavy fines, the New China News Agency reported Tuesday.
The regulations, which went into effect Nov. 28, have apparently become popular with customers. In the first 10 months of this year, 200 cases of overcharging and abuse by taxi drivers were reported in the coastal city, the agency said.
It cited one incident in which a driver overcharged two Japanese and one Taiwanese the equivalent of $4.50 and then yelled at them when they refused to pay.
The driver later was fined about $143.
